Sending items abroad

We will need to know what is in the package or envelope (i.e. documents) to enable it to clear customs, it forms part of the menu when processing items. Having the information attached to the item will help us to process it efficiently.

DHL (individual item up to 75Kg, multiple items up to 100Kg)

DHL collect and deliver around lunchtime, so for items to go out the same day we need to have them in the morning of that day to give us time to process it in time for collection.

Some departments have a DHL account, those that do not can send items via the mailroom.

We will need to know the following information if sending abroad:

  • Contact name and telephone number at the destination.
  • What is being sent.

If it’s an electrical item we will also need to know the following information or it will not clear customs:

  • Full description and model of item.
  • Serial numbers and place of manufacture.

If you are uncertain or need more information please give us a call on EXT. 3981.

Personal deliveries

The purpose of University mailroom is to provide a postal service both internally and externally for the University of St. Andrews. Please note that all items being delivered by Royal Mail that come into the mailroom will be examined and the mailroom team will use their discretion to decide if items are work related or not. If it is felt that items are of such a nature the item will need to be collected.

As a result of an increasing volume of personal deliveries (online store purchases) being made to the University mailroom, a collection service was successfully implemented in November 2017. Staff will receive an email from the mailroom advising them that a package has been delivered for them and they will be required to collect the parcel from the mailroom within 48 hours.

The member of staff or a nominated person will be able to collect the delivery from the mailroom. Please note, if nominating a person to collect your delivery you must notify the mailroom in advance. Parcels will only be handed over to the addressee as detailed on the parcel or the confirmed nominated person. Items not collected within the 48 hour time frame will be returned to sender.

Any questions relating to the above should be directed to mailroom@st-andrews.ac.uk.
