New employees pre-boarding

Congratulations on your new role at the University of St Andrews.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to our community. Before your first day, these resources will help you prepare, complete essential tasks and feel ready to begin your new role.

Right to work

This guidance explains what you need to do, depending on whether you are a permanent, fixed-term or flexible worker. It also sets out which documents are acceptable and how HR will verify your identity.

Flexible Worker Assignments (FWAs)

If you’ll be working for the University on a flexible or casual basis, your contract is called a Flexible Worker Assignment (FWA). This type of short-term agreement is used for roles such as teaching or demonstrating, exam invigilation, hospitality, or ad-hoc administrative support.

Before you start, please read the Flexible Worker guide to understand your terms of engagement, payment process, and what to expect when you begin work.

Immigration (inbound to UK)

If you’re moving to the UK to work at the University, the HR Immigration team can guide you through visa requirements and compliance steps.

Find out which immigration route applies to you and what to do before you arrive.

Removal and relocation expenses

If you’re moving to the area to start your new role, you may be eligible for financial support with your relocation costs.

Find out what’s included in the University’s relocation package, how to claim expenses, and when repayments may apply.

Essential onboarding tasks

Before your first day, complete a few key tasks to make sure everything is ready for your arrival. These include setting up your IT account, arranging your staff ID card, and opening a UK bank account if needed.

Travel and campus navigation

Find your way around before you arrive. Explore University travel options, campus maps, and the Walter Bower House new staff guide (for professional services staff) to help you get oriented before your first day.
