John Petrie
Disability Adviser
John was appointed to the position of Disability Adviser in April 2010 and previous to this worked in a similar role at the University of Abertay Dundee. John sees the role of Disability Adviser as ensuring access to materials for all students with the emphasis on inclusive practice, and as a support mechanism working towards empowering individuals wherever possible. John enjoys working with students, ensuring their academic and personal development is not stilted by disability or health issues wherever possible.
Educated at the University of Dundee, John graduated with an Upper Second in Modern History and American Studies before gaining a PG Diploma in Information Technology and an MBA. He took further qualifications in Mental Health First Aid and Assistive Technology in the post-16 education sector.
John has worked in a number of student support settings including community education and further education as well as universities. He has experience in disability needs assessments at higher education level and an interest in the use of technology to promote equality for all. John is a member of the National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP) and the Assistive Technology Adviser Network (ATANET).
