Safe use of gas cylinders

Safe use of gas cylinders

The filling and maintenance of gas cylinders owned by a School/Unit should only be performed by 'competent' persons. School/Unit owned gas cylinders must undergo the statutory annual examination. Where a cylinder is hired or leased from another company e.g. BOC it is the responsibility of that company to ensure that it is safe.

When accidents involving gas cylinders occur they can cause serious injury or even death. It is therefore important for users to identify the associated hazards and implement measures to eliminate or reduce risks.

Action required by heads

The Head of School/Unit should ensure that:

The following guide entitled 'Safe Use of Gas Cylinders' is brought to the attention of all relevant staff;

This guidance is taken into account when producing School/Unit health and safety rules governing work involving the use/storage of gas cylinders.
