Confined Spaces - Work in Confined Spaces

Confined Spaces Regulations 1997

The above goal-setting Regulations, to reduce the high risks associated with work in confined spaces, came into force on 28th January, 1998.

The Regulations require employers to:

  • avoid entry to confined spaces, e.g. by doing work from outside;

  • follow a safe system of work if entry into confined spaces is unavoidable;

  • put in place adequate emergency arrangements, before work starts, which will also safeguard rescuers.

Action by Heads

Heads should ensure that any work carried out by staff/students in confined spaces is, prior to commencement, appropriately assessed in line with the requirements of these Regulations and any other relevant regulations.

It is expected that the Head of the School/Unit will take account of the following guidance and ensure that any control measures, deemed by the risk assessment to be necessary for health and safety, are implemented.
