Sustainability
The University of St Andrews is committed to addressing the twin crises of the climate emergency and biodiversity collapse through embedding sustainability as a key priority in our governance strategy.

Our commitment to sustainability
At the University of St Andrews, sustainability is at the heart of our mission.
We’ve been tackling climate change for decades, starting in 1998 with the launch of the St Andrews Prize for the Environment, one of the first major steps in our long-standing commitment to the planet.
In 2005, we formed the Environment Team within our Estates department to drive sustainable change across the University. That same year, we introduced one of the first truly interdisciplinary sustainable development programmes, empowering students to engage with global sustainability challenges.
We’ve continued to make strides in sustainability with milestones such as opening our own biomass plant in 2017 to source energy more responsibly, and introducing a socially responsible investment policy for all University funds in 2019. In 2020, we launched a hands-on sustainability education programme for new students to build practical skills for a more sustainable future.
But we’re not just talking about sustainability – we’re making it happen. We’re on an ambitious journey to achieve net zero by 2035, and we’re actively seeking passionate individuals like you to join us.
Preparing future leaders in sustainability
The University is committed to fostering the next generation of sustainability leaders. By embedding sustainability into our academic programmes and offering flexible, digitally-supported learning, we equip students to drive positive change for our planet.
Our campus is a living laboratory where research informs practical sustainability solutions. Eden Campus leads the way as a hub for innovation and operations in our journey to net zero. Beyond our facilities, we collaborate with the local community to amplify our impact.
Through partnerships with global experts and organisations, we aim to advance research, create new technologies, and inspire changes that reduce our collective impact on the planet's resources.
Sustainability for all
We’re making sustainability accessible to everyone at the University. By providing transparent emissions reporting and actionable advice, we empower students, staff and the local community to make informed decisions that contribute to a more sustainable future.
Digital innovation for a greener future
Technology will play a role in everything we do. From rethinking how we use campus space to transforming how we travel and purchase goods, we are integrating digital innovations across every part of university life to increase efficiency and reduce our environmental impact.
The St Andrews forest
One of our most exciting initiatives is the creation of a St Andrews Forest. This natural space will help absorb carbon emissions, support wildlife and provide opportunities for education, enjoyment and research – all while helping us meet our sustainability goals.
Join us in creating change
When you join us, you will become part of a community committed to making a real difference. If you're eager to create impact and collaborate with a forward-thinking team shaping a sustainable future, we’d love to hear from you. Together, we can create lasting change and lead the way for future generations.
