Illness or injury while in student accommodation

Find out how to get medical help and support, and what to do if you need to stay in hospital.

Medical help

Always call 999 in a health emergency. This lets you access emergency services, including ambulances.

If you need urgent health advice or can't see a doctor in person, call 1045 from any University phone or 111 from any other UK phone to contact National Health Service (NHS) 24.

Talk to the wardens or a member of staff in your accommodation if you have any problems accessing medical services.

First aid

All University accommodation has first aid boxes, which include medical supplies.

Someone trained to help, a ‘first aider’, should always be in your accommodation. The names of the first aiders for your accommodation will be displayed close to your room.

Hospital stays

If you need to stay overnight in hospital because of illness or injury, contact Student Services or your Halls Life wardens. It's important to tell them when you are in hospital and when you return to your accommodation.

They will provide the support you need while you are in hospital and ensure arrangements are in place for your return. For fire safety reasons, staff must also know when you are not in your accommodation.

Health services

When you arrive in St Andrews and are a fully matriculated student, you need to register with a general practitioner (GP). You can choose to join NHS or private health services. The University also provides help and support in accessing healthcare
