Module description

This module will examine the concepts of 'modernity', 'modernism' and the 'avant-garde' in the context of Spanish culture in the 1920s and 1930s; it will contextualise JosÚ Ortega y Gasset's reflections on 'new art' or 'dehumanised art'; it will take stock of Ortega's theory of the novel; it will explore the critique of Western values and the celebration of desire in the work of surrealist poets; it will analyse representations of the life (vitalism)/ reason (rationalism) dichotomy in the work of fiction writers; and it will look at the use of the 'mythical method' by those very same writers.
