Module description
Reading is a skill that most of us take for granted, yet it gives us access to an amazing breadth of information and entertainment. This module examines the emergence of a mass reading culture in Britain in the long nineteenth century. It considers the rise of literacy and education, and the provision of cheaper forms of printed matter. It investigates the roles of authors, editors, publishers and booksellers in bringing print to the new reading public. As well as using printed and online secondary material critically to summarize and critically evaluate scholarly arguments about the history of the book, students will also have the opportunity to do hands-on research with original printed primary material and to learn about how books and magazines were made.
