Module description

This module provides a thorough grounding in museum and heritage studies through investigation into global literature and case studies. Students will be encouraged to think critically about historic, current and evolving debates in the cultural sector, enabling them to situate their own positionality and practice within contemporary context. Themes examined will include museum activism, museums and climate action, decolonisation, community heritage, eco-museology, and the postdigital museum. Teaching sessions will take a range of formats, including class trips structured to provide the opportunity for students to consider the impact of theoretical developments in museology upon practice and vice versa. Taken in combination with the skills-based core module, Museum Practice, this offering provides students with knowledge from which they may develop specialisms relevant to the sector, shaping their ongoing research interests and potential future career paths.
