Module description
This module examines the creation and frequent re-invention of China-the-nation-state through language, literature and culture in its widest sense, and focuses on the imbrication of politics and culture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Texts studied will be drawn from poetry, fiction, film, television, and popular music.

Intended learning outcomes
- By the end of the module, students will have a deepened sense of the practices and processes that have contributed to making the Chinese nation-state imaginary
- Students will have acquired an acquaintance with poetry, fiction, film, television, and popular music of the modern and contemporary periods
- Students will have a grasp of the political and ideological history of the period studied
- Students will have acquired the fundamental knowledge necessary for writing a dissertation on a topic of modern Chinese cultural studies
- Students will be able to discuss a twentieth- or twenty-first-century text/author in a sophisticated manner
