SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. Module description

This module continues on from CN3001. Students will continue to acquire Chinese characters and build vocabulary while studying more complex literary and audiovisual texts and honing their spoken language skills.

Intended learning outcomes

  • By the end of this module students will be able to comprehend the main meanings of authentic Chinese news announcements (radio and TV) as well as colloquial Chinese used in Chinese films and TV dramas, and understand the speech of native speakers on a wider range of topics
  • Students will be able to express their ideas with greater clarity on a wider range of topics with appropriately employed idiomatic phrases, and narrate more elaborate and detailed stories
  • Students will be able to read more sophisticated Chinese texts such as current and cultural affairs reportage, longer poems, and short stories, and novel extracts, and have a working knowledge of 2,200-2,600 Chinese characters
  • Students will write an organized and detailed piece of prose of around 1000 characters in length in an appropriate written style
  • Students will have a good grasp of the distinction between Standard Spoken Chinese and Written Chinese in terms of vocabulary and structure
