SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

A hundred years ago, the Chinese nation-state was a fledging enterprise. A century later, having navigated the twentieth century in various forms, China, in terms of culture, economy and creativity, is a structured albeit troubled reality. In this module you will be introduced different facets of China's official and alternative cultural creativity in its socio-political context, from the 1920s to the recent Tik-Tok generation. Musical and visual cultural texts will be employed throughout the module.

Intended learning outcomes

  • By the end of the module students will be able to: - discuss the many varied ways in which Chinese cultural production and cultural consumption has developed in the twentieth century
  • - discuss the ways in which Chinese art, literature, film and consumerism is connected to shifting socio-political contexts
  • - understand the different ways in which we might talk about 'China' and 'Chineseness' and its relationship to the rest of the world.
  • - use skills such as close reading and semiotic analysis to discuss relevant texts, films and other cultural products.
