Module description

As grass roots initiatives embedded in local traditions and concerns, community museums and heritage organisations are ideally placed to respond to some of the most pressing issues facing the world today, including climate change, decolonisation and well-being. Taking its cue from the Scottish polymath Sir Patrick Geddes’s maxim “Think global, act local” (1915), this module will interrogate the ways in which such organisations can promote a sense of place and belonging, act as catalysts for adaptation, and build capacity towards sustainable futures. Where relevant, the module will be illustrated through a selection of national and international case studies operating at the front line of climate emergencies – many of which have been led by researchers at the University of St Andrews – with a view to grappling with the complexities around ‘sustainability’ in the global South and global North past, present and future.
