Course Details
This taster course, curated by the faculty at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, offers a concise introduction to political violence. We focus on the language used to describe and analyse this phenomenon, as well as the causes and effectiveness of terrorism.
Throughout the course, we’ll examine a range of perspectives and engage with case studies that uncover the complex and varied manifestations of political violence. This taster course is the perfect starting point for gaining a foundational understanding of these critical topics.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for those looking for a brief introduction to the study of political violence. It is ideally suited to those who would like to quickly develop a working understanding of how and why political violence occurs.
Teaching Format
This taster course can be completed in a few sessions. It contains six text-based lessons with brief video recordings to contextualise key discussions, and knowledge check quizzes to check progress and understanding.

Course requirements
This course requires no previous knowledge of terrorism and security studies. The course requires 4 hours of study to complete.
