Course Details
Take a journey through the Cosmos as you explore the stars and the Universe beyond. Starting with your feet planted on planet Earth, work your way through the Solar System, out into the Milky Way, and into the darker depths of space. As you learn about the properties of planets, stars, and galaxies, discover how they are shaped by the laws of physics.
Find out how we know what we know about the Universe, and look at both traditional and more modern astronomical research projects, such as the recently launched space telescopes and how humanity is continuing to strive to understand the universe. Alongside the scientific view of astronomy, you will the social and cultural impact of the stars and celestial bodies, from the stone circles in Northern Scotland to the astronomical artwork and storytelling in Australia.

Who is this course for
This course is ideal for budding astronomers looking to deepen their understanding of the Universe around them, as well as home telescopes users who want to know more about the science and culture around the stars that they observe.

Teaching format
A Global Approach to Astronomy takes 50 learning hours to complete fully. This course is designed to be a self-paced experience, with curated readings, interactive activities, expert-led videos, and asynchronous discussion forums, which you can take in your own time around your schedule. All the content for this course is available from the start of the course and can be accessed at any time before the course end.
Certificate
Upon successfully completing the course you will receive a Certificate of Completion and a digital badge from the University of St Andrews.
