Powell Hall

Powell Hall is a five-storey building situated adjacent to Agnes Blackadder Hall on the North Haugh, near the various science buildings. It is also located near to the Sports Centre and is only a 15-minute walk to the town centre.

Powell Hall is named after Renee Powell, American professional golfer and the second African-American woman ever to play on the LPGA Tour.

Proposed development 2024-25

There is a proposal to develop the site at the Andrew Melville end of Agnes Blackadder Hall for a new 150 bedroom hall of residence. Whilst no start date has been decided, further details will be provided nearer the time should the construction start during the academic year 2024-25.

Hall information

Powell Hall offers self-catered en suite postgraduate accommodation.

Rooms are situated along corridors. Kitchens (typically shared between five students) are dotted along each corridor and include a dining and lounge area.

All the bedrooms are allocated as single occupancy and have their own shower room.

For postgraduate students, Powell Hall has 205 single self-catered en suite rooms with small double beds (4 feet wide).

Two of the rooms and their associated kitchens and lounges have been designed for wheelchair access.

Location

Powell Hall is located on the North Haugh on the western edge of town, near the Faculty of Science buildings and the Sports Centre. From here, you are only a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and local amenities, and only a 10-minute walk to the beautiful West Sands beach as well as the Old Course golf links.

What is Powell Hall like?

Powell Hall is adjacent to Agnes Blackadder Hall, and the residents of each hall will be free to share each other's facilities, social spaces, games rooms, etc.

The Agnes Blackadder Committee and extended wardennial team organise events to encompass both buildings and create a strong community feel.

Facilities

The brand new Powell Hall building offers various facilities for students to use for studying or socialising.

Laundry

The laundry room contains washers and dryers which are operated card-operated by the Washnet app.

Main social space

A large open space on the ground floor is fitted with an assortment of tables, chairs and sofas for relaxing, socialising, holding events and informal studying.

Study spaces

As well as informal study areas on the ground floor, dedicated study rooms are available on each floor of the building, equipped with data points and an assortment of whiteboards and TV screens to assist students with their presentation work.

Private dining room

Residents are able to book this room – fitted with a kitchen, tables and chairs – for their own special events, like a birthday party or simply a special meal with friends.

Kitchen and lounges

Each kitchen and lounge is allocated to five students. The kitchen is equipped with an induction cooking hob, an oven, a large fridge-freezer, a microwave, a kettle and a generous amount of storage cupboards.

The kitchen includes a dining and lounge area with table and chairs, as well as sofas and a coffee table to allow students to relax in their small community. A TV is provided in the lounge area, although it will be the students' responsibility to purchase a TV licence should they wish to use the TV.

Cinema room

The cinema room is an informal room with a large TV screen and comfortable seating.

Games room

The games room is a large room with some seating and various games for relaxing anytime.

Music room

The music room is a sound-insulated room for residents to practice their own musical instruments individually or with a small group.

Support

All University halls of residence have their own wardennial team who live within the hall and are trained to support students in a range of matters – from advice on academic matters through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving in weekend.
