Leadership Beyond Sports

6 June - 28 June 2026

Unlock your leadership potential through sport, innovation, and personal growth.

Leadership Beyond Sports is an intensive and transformational professional development initiative designed specifically for student-athletes and students with a strong, demonstrable passion for sport. The programme supports those seeking to enhance their career trajectory as they transition from higher education into the professional workforce.

Student-athletes bring with them resilience, teamwork, and leadership; qualities that are highly valued by employers. This immersive programme helps translate those strengths into meaningful career success. By combining cutting-edge leadership theory, experiential learning, and intercultural collaboration, the course equips participants with advanced leadership competencies and the confidence needed to thrive in competitive professional environments.

Students will apply these principles to real-world projects in collaboration with partner organisations. This holistic programme enables students to build knowledge and confidence while enhancing personal and professional growth. Students develop a skills portfolio through guided reflective practice and create tangible outputs in response to practical briefs.

The course will take a broad overview of leadership in different contexts enabling student athletes to draw on their sporting experience and consider how to translate this to the world outside of sport.

Delivered through a dynamic blend of lectures and workshops, project-based learning, and reflective practice, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop and apply practical leadership skills through experiential learning, with a focus on social innovation and sport.
  • Learn from industry professionals working within the sports sector, including field trips to the world-famous Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh and the R&A World Golf Museum in St Andrews.
  • Build an individual skills portfolio and development plan, including a bespoke DiSC leadership profile, and gain confidence in articulating this in an evolving professional landscape.
  • Contribute to and engage with Scottish community and culture.
  • Understand diverse approaches to leadership and their targeted application in different contexts through agile practice.

Additionally, students will have access to our Saints Sports Centre facilities for training. Facilities include a gym and fitness suite with cardio, resistance, free weights and functional training, an outdoor gym, and a performance suite.
