Student support

As a registered exchange or study abroad student, you will have access to the same support facilities and services that are available to other registered students of St Andrews.

The Global Office runs student consultation hours during term time to answer questions relating to the BA (International Honours) programme, other collaborative programmes and study abroad opportunities.

Current students can book an appointment with a member of the Global Office team. Most appointments are virtual this semester, but we also have a small number of in-person appointments available at St Katharine’s West. Please note that drop-ins are currently unavailable and all students must book an appointment slot in advance.

If you are an inbound student and require documentation, such as a learning agreement, to be signed by the Global Office, please email this to studyabroad@st-andrews.ac.uk and we can this for you digitally.

The Study Abroad intern will contact you during your time in St Andrews via email and through the University of St Andrews Global partnerships and study abroad Facebook page. You are also welcome to contact them either through Facebook or by emailing globaloff-intern@st-andrews.ac.uk.

The Advice and Support Centre (ASC) is the primary information point for all students of St Andrews, and you can visit the centre with any questions or concerns.

If a query cannot be resolved instantly at the Advice and Support Centre, you may be offered an appointment with a support adviser. The support adviser will listen and advise you about the different types of support available, in the University, locally and online.

As an incoming undergraduate or postgraduate student, you are welcome to attend workshops, courses and programmes to help you build your study skills. You can also attend both drop-in and one-on-one sessions with an academic adviser.

A number of academic Schools also have their own programmes of academic skills workshops in place, led by experienced postgraduates.

International postgraduate students may be interested in joining the M-Skills programme which comprises a number of workshops, lectures, online resources, mentoring schemes and networking events to help you make the most of your studies at St Andrews.

Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED)

The University’s Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED) offers a range of academic and development services to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Adjusting to a new academic culture can be challenging, and CEED services will be useful in helping you to familiarise yourself with academic expectations at St Andrews, essay writing, assessment, as well as academic rules and regulations.

Exchange and study abroad students should familiarise themselves with the CEED service and utilise the academic skills' support available.

Academic mentoring and peer support

Mentoring schemes match first years with older students within their academic schools or societies, allowing the student to benefit from the perspective of someone who has recently been in their position. Find out more about mentoring schemes for undergraduates and postgraduates.

If you have questions or would like advice on any aspect of academic or personal life you can call or instant message the University’s student-run listening service Nightline between 8pm and 7am during term time. If you would rather speak to someone face-to-face, you may be interested in joining the peer support network, a flexible mentoring resource you can use to discuss serious issues, or simply to find a student to accompany you to an event. If you are an international student, the International Education Institute (IE) can help your transition into university life by enhancing your language skills and familiarising you with the culture and structure of the University of St Andrews. They provide a variety of programmes including pre-sessional and in-sessional courses in English and modules in linguistics and academic English.

They also provide foundation programmes to help undergraduates and postgraduates develop academic and language skills before starting their degree programme.

The University has a dedicated Careers Centre which is available to all students and provide advice, support and resources about career options and opportunities.

The University also offers two awards, open to all students, known as the Saints Skills Awards. You can develop a range of skills through the Skills Builder Award such as:

- commercial awareness
- communication
- confidence
- IT skills
- leadership
- negotiation and persuasion
- organisation
- perseverance and motivation
- problem solving
- teamwork.
You can learn how to best articulate these and other skills to employers or in applications for further study through the Skills Spotlight Award. Each award will help to enhance your employability whilst developing your personal and professional skills.
