After you apply

After you submit your application, the Study Abroad team will email you within four weeks with a decision. If you applied to St Andrews through a study abroad provider, you will hear a decision directly from your provider.

If you are offered a place on our exchange or study abroad programmes, your offer will be one of the following:

  • Unconditional offer – you have satisfied all of the entry requirements.
  • Conditional offer – you must meet certain conditions as outlined in your offer email before the University can make an unconditional offer. Conditions must be met by 31 August for Semester 1 entry and 10 January for Semester 2 entry.

An offer of a place does not guarantee that you can take the courses you have listed on your application form. Your course of study will be finalised when you meet with your Academic Adviser during Orientation Week in St Andrews. Find out more about academic advising and choosing your modules.

How to respond

Once you have received an official offer by email, you may accept or decline your offer by logging into the applicant portal.

Next steps

Once you have accepted your offer of a place and met all conditions, you will receive an email from the Associate Dean within four weeks which will inform you of your St Andrews username and the steps you must take to pre-register, including activating your username, applying for a student ID card, and pre-advising for modules.

As your arrival in St Andrews draws nearer, you will receive a further email inviting you to complete the online matriculation (registration) process. It is vital that you complete this step before you arrive in St Andrews.

Find out more about what to do before you arrive.

Unsuccessful applications

If your application is unsuccessful, you may re-apply in the following application cycle. The new application will be considered against the standard entry criteria for that year of entry.

To request feedback on an unsuccessful application, you should contact the Study Abroad team within ten days of the decision being issued. Feedback will be provided in writing within a reasonable timeframe. Feedback does not constitute a reconsideration of an application.

If you believe there was a procedural error, irregularity or maladministration relating to the admissions procedures or policies and wish to make a formal complaint, you should contact the Assistant Registrar by emailing studyabroad@st-andrews.ac.uk in the first instance. The complaint will be handled according to the framework laid out in the University’s complaints handling procedure. See the exchange and study abroad student policy for more information.
