Applying for accommodation
International students are able to apply to stay in one of the University’s halls of residence. You can also try to find your own private accommodation in St Andrews.
Those applying for University accommodation must submit their applications by the correct deadline. Find out more about applying for accommodation as an undergraduate or postgraduate student below.
Undergraduate
Undergraduate exchange and study abroad students are guaranteed University accommodation as long as they apply by 30 June for their academic year of entry. The online application form will be available from 1 April. Late applications may not be considered.

University halls of residence are all co-ed, with mixed nationalities and age groups.
When you apply for accommodation, you will indicate your accommodation preferences:
- shared or single bedroom
- shared or private (en suite) bathroom facilities
- catered (meal plans) or self-catered.
You are not guaranteed your preferred choice of residence.
Postgraduate
Postgraduate exchange and study abroad students are not guaranteed University accommodation. However, single applicants who apply for accommodation before July each year are normally offered University owned, managed or leased accommodation.
Students from outside the UK and EU
International postgraduate students applying for a taught programme who normally live outside the UK and EU will be provided with priority access to postgraduate accommodation. This priority access is dependent on you confirming your offer of a place before the dates outlined below.
- 31 March: overseas applicants who have accepted an offer from the University (either conditional or unconditional), paid the pre-payment fee and have completed an online accommodation application by 30 March are most likely to receive University accommodation.
- 30 May: applicants who have accepted an offer from the University (either conditional or unconditional), paid the pre-payment fee and completed an online accommodation application by 30 May will still be considered for University accommodation.
- 30 June: the final deadline for priority access to University accommodation. University Accommodation will continue to accept applications after this deadline on a case-by-case basis; however, if an applicant accepts their offer and pays the pre-payment fee before this deadline, this will increase the chances of being allocated a place in University accommodation.
