Music for students
Although there is no full undergraduate music degree at St Andrews, the University offers exceptional musical opportunities for all who wish to take part. Students are represented by the Music Centre Student President and have access to many musical opportunities.
Vocal scholars regularly feature in productions by Byre Opera, which collaborates with the Music Centre to stage an annual production. Recent productions include Sondheim’s Side by Side and Frank Martin’s Le vin herbé. Scholarship chamber music groups provide intensive coaching and performance opportunities for talented instrumentalists, while the University Chamber Orchestra offers advanced orchestral experience for skilled players. St Salvator’s Chapel Choir, one of Scotland’s finest university choirs, performs regularly at services, concerts, and tours, offering exceptional choral opportunities for skilled singers.
The student-led Music Society encompasses six groups, including a big band, symphony orchestra and chamber choir. The Musical Theatre Society also stages three productions per semester. Recent highlights include Grease, Jekyll and Hyde and Little Shop of Horrors. The many other musical societies include the venerable Gilbert and Sullivan Society, the A Cappella Society and JazzWorks.
