Laidlaw Music Centre room bookings
The Laidlaw Music Centre will re-open for individual practice on Monday 5 July, 1pm to 5pm Monday to Friday initially. Please follow the guidelines below to keep the building and others using it as safe as possible.
Bookings are restricted to one hour for one person at a time. Each booking includes a ventilation period as follows:
- 30 minutes for singers, brass and wind
- 15 minutes for others
For example: A singer who books 10am to 11am must vacate the room by 10.30am to allow 30 minutes ventilation period before the next booking.
If you played the piano or touched anything else (for example, a music stand or computer), please use the cleaning products provided to wipe them down before you leave so the room is left clean and safe for the next booking.
You must wear a mask in all public areas and follow the one-way system. On arrival you will be admitted by a member of staff who will ask you a few health questions. If you have a University ID card, please tap it on arrival and exit for track and trace purposes.
Only Music Centre members may book rooms.
University staff and student members can book via online room booking. When booking a room, please make sure you enter your full name in the Booking Title section.
If you are a non-University member, please email email@example.com to request a booking. We aim to respond to booking requests by the next working day.
The Music Centre now has a dedicated private server for the exclusive use of Music Centre members for low latency music making over the internet. This means you can have lessons, rehearsals, masterclasses and improvisation in groups etc. with music being made in real time without muting other participants. This is called Jamulus.
Anyone in the UK (and even some neighbouring countries) with a good broadband connection and wired internet (with WiFi turned off) and wired headphones can make use of this to achieve audio communication with typical overall audio delays of between 40ms and 50ms (which is far better than available through software such as Zoom).
Connecting to the private server for the Music Centre requires the user to download Jamulus and also requires the IP address which is provided along with connection instructions when you make a booking.
Jamulus is available 24/7.
