Strings in Spring
The main focus of this course is chamber music coaching, given by the members of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, quartet in residence at the University of St Andrews, and guest tutors Christopher George, Sophie Renshaw and William Conway.
Chamber groups usually study two works over the duration of the course. Each group will receive a number of coaching sessions, and these will be supplemented with formal rehearsal periods, a repertoire session, a string ensemble session, and also the opportunity for informal sight-reading.
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet will give a public recital on the first night of the course, and will lead a masterclass with a scholarship quartet from the University of St Andrews. There will also be an optional evening meal at the Byre Theatre restaurant on the Saturday. For more details, please view the 2020 course programme (coming soon).
Thursday 2 April to Sunday 5 April 2020
The course will take place in the brand new Laidlaw Music Centre on Queens Terrace, and in St Leonard's School, with group sessions being held in the St Leonard's School music auditorium.
Dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday will be in the Byre Theatre restaurant.
The course fee is £270 per person. Places will only be confirmed on receipt of fees from all members of your group (minimum four members).
The course fee includes:
- all group tuition and other organised musical activities
- admission to the Fitzwilliam concert
- refreshments on arrival
- a complimentary pre-concert drink at the bar
- a light lunch on the final day.
The Music Centre prefers applications from pre-formed quartets or larger ensembles. Individuals may be considered, but the Music Centre will only confirm your place if they are able to incorporate you into a group, and you will be asked for payment if your place is confirmed. Please email email@example.com if you would like to be considered.
The closing date for applications is 17 January 2020, or when the course reaches capacity.
Accommodation is not included in the course fee. Details of local accommodation providers can be found on the Stay in St Andrews website or the St Andrews' Best B&Bs website. Some of these may provide a 10% to 15% discount if you quote "University of St Andrews Music Centre" at the time of booking.
Food and drink
