Lessons

Please do not pay for lessons until you have arranged them with the Music Centre office.

From 1 August 2026, lessons fees are:

• £22.75 for 30 minutes
• £44.50 for one hour.

Everyone taking lessons must also be a Music Centre member and pay the appropriate membership fee. The Music Centre offers a lessons-only membership fee for those who do not use any of the other facilities or services. 

The first lesson is an opportunity for student and teacher to meet and decide whether they wish to continue. Payment is due after the first lesson, either for just one lesson if you don't want to continue, or for the whole semester if you do. Pay for music lessons online.

Dates for music teaching in 2026-2027 are as follows:

Semester 1 (9 tuition weeks)

Monday 21 September to Friday 16 October 2026 (4 weeks)

(No lessons during Independent Learning Week unless specifically arranged with your teacher)

Monday 26 October to Friday 27 November 2026 (5 weeks)

Semester 2 (11 tuition weeks)

Monday 25 January to Friday 26 February 2027 (5 weeks)

(No lessons during February vacation unless specifically arranged with your teacher)

Monday 8 March to Friday 2 April 2027 (4 weeks)

(No lessons during Independent Learning Week unless specifically arranged with your teacher)

Monday 12 April to Friday 23 April 2027 (2 weeks)

Semester 3 (post-semester/summer term) 

Monday 26 April to mid-June 2027

Many of our teachers will continue teaching after the end of the University's standard teaching period, until the end of the school summer term.  Please speak to your teacher in the first instance if you are interested.  In some cases it may be necessary to switch to a different teacher for this block.  NB: this block is not included in student scholarships.

Would you like to learn the bagpipes? The Music Centre offers group tuition to beginners with the Associate Teacher of Piping.

Please contact the office by emailing music@st-andrews.ac.uk if you are interested. Classes will only run if there is sufficient interest, and pricing will be dependent on the number of students.

Workshops in conducting and directing for beginners are held regularly.  See Conducting Clinic for details.  

For those with some skills already and who may be conducting an ensemble or choir, one-on-one sessions are available.

Sian Edwards, Honorary Professor of Conducting, directs conducting short courses in St Andrews each year.

Subject to demand, the Music Centre offers beginner's classes in guitar for children, students and adults. Please register your interest by emailing music@st-andrews.ac.uk. Prices will be dependent on student numbers.
