Wiley Read and Publish Agreement

Libraries and Museums have been advised by Jisc of a change affecting our Wiley Read & Publish agreement, one of the Big 5 deals negotiated last year.

The Wiley deal currently covers both hybrid and fully gold open access (OA) titles, but these are subject to a UK-level cap. This cap is projected to be reached on 4 Nov 2026, which means new submissions to fully OA journals after this date will find that the agreement is not available.

Authors of new submission will be offered an option to pay a discounted APC (Article Processing Charge), and they can contact the OA team for advice on possible funding or seek an alternative journal.

Our Journal Search Tool will be kept updated so that this information is presented for anyone searching for Wiley fully gold journals.

Articles already under review

We will contact a small number of authors directly, where they have articles previously submitted to a fully OA journal in 2026, approved as eligible for funding*, and already under review. If articles are accepted prior to the cap being reached, they will be covered by the deal. If acceptance is after the fund closes and before the end of 2026, we will explore alternative funding arrangements including use of the UKRI OA Block Grant where appropriate. The cap will reset from January 2027, and the Wiley fully OA Gold fund will reopen to both articles under review and new submissions.

*For fully OA titles in this deal, eligibility is initially approved on submission in order to ‘commit’ funds under this business model. The OA team will have checked and approved in this case before acceptance. However, APC funds are not drawn down until an article has passed peer review, been editorially accepted and the author has signed their OA licence.

Articles not affected by these changes

This does not affect submissions to Wiley hybrid journals, which continue to be covered by the agreement where eligible. Other publisher agreements are not affected. Read access to Wiley journals is not affected.
