Request teaching and exam arrangements as a student with disability

Updated on: 3 June 2025

Understand how to request teaching and exam arrangements, and how University staff can support you.

Teaching and exam arrangements can be put in place if you have a disability, longstanding health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty (SpLD).

Prospective students should contact the Disability Service as soon as they consider applying to the University of St Andrews, especially after receiving an offer to study at the University.

If you have any questions, please complete this online form.

New students

To request teaching or exam arrangements, you should contact the Disability Service by using this online form to declare your condition and have your support needs assessed.

The following deadlines apply:

  • 14 October, for Semester 1 entrant students
  • 10 March, for Semester 2 entrant students

You may need to provide supporting documents like a letter from a doctor or other suitably qualified professional, or a report from an Educational Psychologist if you have a learning difficulty such as dyslexia, ADHD or dyspraxia.

The Disability Adviser will tell you what information is required and in what format.

After agreeing a support plan

Once you have discussed support with a Disability or SpLD Adviser and agreed a support plan, there are other individuals who will be involved in your support:

  • The Examination Officer will make sure your exam requirements are scheduled and communicated to the relevant people. These may include getting extra time or an individual room and communicating your needs to the exam invigilator.
  • School Disabilities Coordinators will ensure that relevant staff in your School have checked your support plan and made reasonable adjustments based on equality legislation and the University’s obligations. The School Disabilities Coordinators, and Module Coordinators, will have access to the support plan you agreed with your Disability Adviser.
