Request maintenance or repair

The University provides maintenance, cleaning, groundskeeping, and facilities support services across its buildings and outdoor spaces.


Most of the support provided by the University's Estates team is based on requests from staff. If you notice that something needs to be repaired or maintained, you should report it.

Urgent and emergency requests

Urgent requests should only be for work that cannot wait until the next day. Emergency situations are situations that may threaten personal safety or the integrity of a building, building services, equipment or grounds.

  • Building Reporting Officer
  • Residence Manager
  • Residence Assistant Manager

Setting up rooms and moving furniture

Facilities Support Officers (FSOs) are available Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm, for general janitorial duties. For example, setting up rooms and moving furniture.

Facilities Support Officers are centralised within four areas:

  • North Haugh
  • United Colleges
  • St Mary's Group
  • Mail Room

If you require assistance, please phone +44 (0)1334 46 4333. When you call this number, the phone menu will give you the following options to contact the relevant Facilities Support Team Leader (FSTL):

Whilst Facilities Support Officers are responsible for securing University buildings, all staff are asked to help with this. Keyholders should ensure that buildings are secured when leaving outside regular office hours.

Cleaning

Cleaning staff provide a comprehensive service all year, in all the University's non-residential buildings.

Cleaning Supervisors are responsible for:

  • supervising cleaning staff daily
  • allocating cleaning duties
  • overseeing the quality of work
  • responding to requests from Schools and Units for additional cleaning activities

Cleaning staff work a variety of hours during the day, between 7am and 8pm.

Window cleaning

University windows are cleaned every year:

  • Exterior: twice per year, in April and July
  • Interior: once per year, in July

For additional cleaning, Schools and Professional Service Units should email estates@st-andrews.ac.uk.


Grounds services

The Grounds Services team is responsible for the development and maintenance of the University's amenity, recreational and landscaped areas. This includes 63 different places in St Andrews and the surrounding area.

Services include:

  • horticultural maintenance to grass and lawn areas, shrub, herbaceous, annual borders and trees
  • provision of floral displays for official University functions and graduation garden parties
  • upkeep and pruning of hedges, ivy, climbers and tree surgery, felling and planting
  • maintenance and installation of hard and soft landscape features
  • provision and maintenance of:
    • 16 hectares of natural grass sports fields for football, rugby, hockey and shinty
    • artificial surfaces for tennis, football and hockey 
  • snow, ice and litter clearance duties
