Updated on: 18 April 2025
Learn how to use different payment options for your tuition and accommodation fees.
There are a number of different options for paying your tuition and accommodation fees, including single full payments and paying by instalments.
The option to pay by instalment is not available to:
- Students who have repeatedly defaulted on instalments in the past
- Visiting students who are at the University for one semester only
- Sponsors (not including family and friends, who can pay in instalments)
How to pay by single full payment
You can use single full payments for your tuition and accommodation fees. You can pay by:
How to pay by instalments
Instalment plan deadline
Payment instalment plans for 2025-2026 will be available to set up from the beginning of June 2025. You must have made payment or set up an instalment plan to be able to complete matriculation. See the full list of payment deadlines.
The University does not charge interest, service fees or other charges for paying in instalments.
You can either:
- make manual payments before each of the deadlines by bank transfer or debit or credit card
- set up a recurring card plan (RCP) (see below) which means the University will collect the payments automatically from your card on the due date
How to set up a recurring card plan
You must set up your recurring card plan before the start of each academic year.
All major credit and debit cards are accepted (except JCB and Diners cards).
You will need to enter your 9-digit student ID number and your date of birth to access the pay by card option.
For high-value transactions, it is strongly recommended that you tell your bank or credit card issuer that you are using this method to pay fees.
Update or change your recurring card payment plan
American Express cards
Please be aware that if you are setting up, or have set up, your plan using an American Express card, the payment card cannot subsequently be changed to Visa or Mastercard.
Use the update payment card details page on the University payment system to make changes. On this page, type in the email address you entered to set up your plan.
If you have any questions about your payment plan, Ask a question. You can discuss early payments, options for additional instalments or let the University know if your fees change during the year or if you make a one-off payment before the due date (so we don't take payment twice).
Overseas credit cards
If you are offered the option to pay in your home currency, FEXCO is offering an 'exchange rate guarantee'.
The currency conversions service is provided by FEXCO Merchant Services on behalf of the University of St Andrews. See further details about FEXCO's currency conversion and exchange rates.
If you choose not to pay in your home currency, the transaction will be processed in GBP.
Details about bank transfers
International bank transfer and eWallet
The international payment platform Convera GlobalPay for Students allows students, parents and sponsors to pay in their chosen currency by bank transfer or a local online payment option (including Alipay, UnionPay and Sofort). You need to obtain a new quote and new reference ID number for every payment you make using Convera.
Once you've chosen your preferred payment method and currency you will receive payment instructions by email. For a bank transfer this will include bank account details (for example, SWIFT code, IBAN).
UK bank transfer
Make an immediate bank transfer from your UK bank account to the University of St Andrews through Sofort Open Banking Payment Solution and Convera GlobalPay for Students.
Your payment will be received and allocated to your financial statement in two to three working days.
This way to process your payment automatically enters your bank details.
You can also use Convera GlobalPay for Students to make a manual bank transfer payment. This option will take slightly longer to be received by the University and allocated to your financial statement.
