Failure to pay tuition, accommodation or other fees

Updated on: 11 March 2025

Learn what charges or sanctions you may face if you fail to pay tuition, accommodation or other fees on time.

The University has strict payment deadlines for each academic year. If you have any difficulty paying on time, Ask a question.

Late payment charge

A late payment penalty of 3% of your outstanding balance and a £10 administration fee may be charged where a payment remains overdue following a reminder from the University's Finance team.

Declined payments and bank charges

You may be charged a late fee for any payments that are declined. The University is not liable for any charges incurred due to overdraft or credit card charges applied to the payer's account.

What can happen if you fail to pay

If you don't pay your fees or set up a payment plan, you:

  • can't become a fully registered student
  • may not be allowed to matriculate as a returning student
  • may lose access to the Sports Centre
  • may be unable to borrow items from the Library
  • are at risk of losing your University accommodation or any offer of future accommodation
  • may not be permitted to graduate or attend the graduation ceremony

If you have debt problems with the University, you should email creditcontrol@st-andrews.ac.uk to discuss your situation.

Failure to pay policy

Students who have defaulted on their payment plan will be contacted by the Finance team. This team will take the appropriate action in line with the University's Failure to Pay policy to ensure that all payments are made in full.

Finance teams will send information to students' University email. This inbox must be checked regularly.
