Pay your fees as an externally funded student

Updated on: 11 March 2025

Find out what you need to do when your University accommodation or tuition fees are being paid directly to the University by a company or other organisation.

What is an externally funded student?

You are an externally funded student when a private company, government agency like the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) or the Student Loans Company (SLC), or other organisation pays your fees directly to the University.

Self-funded students

Self-funded students’ fees are paid to the University by the student. This could be using their own money, a loan they receive directly from government agencies, or money from a family member or relative. If this is you, follow our self-funded undergraduate and postgraduate guides.

Tell the University who is paying your fees

As soon as you can, and before you matriculate, email sponsor-invoices@st-andrews.ac.uk with an award letter or letter of sponsorship containing full contact details of the sponsor paying your fees so this can be verified and reflected on your student record. You can also provide this information during online matriculation if necessary.

This information must be confirmed at the beginning of each year of your studies.

Deadlines

Invoices are sent to sponsors when matriculation is completed. Payment is due in full within 30 days of invoice date.

Problems and penalties

If your invoice is not paid within 30 days, the fee may be transferred to your student financial record and you will need to pay in full.

A late payment charge of 3% may also be applied if payment remains overdue. See the Failure to Pay policy.

Read theSponsor Terms and Conditions (PDF) for full details.
