Support for students who are D/deaf or have a hearing impairment
Updated on: 3 June 2025
Understand how to access the support available if you are D/deaf or have a hearing impairment.
The Disability Service provides advice and support to students who are D/deaf or have a hearing impairment.
You may need to provide medical information to ensure that appropriate support is put in place, or to support an application for Disabled Students’ Allowance.
Please complete this online form to do any of the following:
- book a portable loop system
- request teaching and exam arrangements
- discuss health and safety support
- request an interpreter or note taker
Loop systems
There are loop systems in specific lecture theatres, and a portable loop system for other teaching environments.
Teaching and exam arrangements
Find out more about when you need to request teaching and exam arrangements and what to expect after agreeing a support plan.
Health and safety
This can include measures for individual emergency evacuation from halls of residence and other University buildings.
British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters or electronic note takers
The University strives to meet the support required, but early notice is advised as this level of support can be difficult to source in the St Andrews area and cannot be guaranteed.
Disability Services can also advise on the use of assistive technology and other adjustments in teaching and learning spaces to support students who are D/deaf or have a hearing impairment.
