11 Oct - Professor Sabine Hyland Hidden Khipus of the Andes
For twenty years, Prof Hyland has collaborated with elders in remote Andean villages to discover new insights into how native Peruvians communicated through coloured cords known as "khipus". Her research has uncovered isolated communities where khipus -- thought to have been wiped out during the European invasion in the 1500s -- were used within living memory. The talk explores the secretive traditions surviving in forgotten mountain villages, and what they can tell us about the Inca khipus of ancient Peru.

10 April - Dr Bess Rhodes (St Andrews) Sex, Lies and Religious Change: the divorce of Elizabeth Geddy in 16thc. St Andrews
In Feb 1560 William Ranton, a citizen of St Andrews claimed his wife Elizabeth Geddy was an adulteress who was trying to murder him. He took his complaint to the newly established kirk session at Holy Trinity Church in St Andrews - so commencing what was probably Scotland's first Protestant divorce case. The truth of the matter proved complex to ascertain, and during their investigation the kirk session elders uncovered a complex story of domestic violence, inquisitive neighbours and female friendship, which they recorded in detail - providing a remarkable insight into the beliefs and behaviours of the residents of St Andrews in a time of religious and political turmoil.
