Title: An argument for the transcendentist theory of persistence

Abstract: I put forward and discuss a new argument in favor of the transcendentist theory of temporal existence, according to which for an object to exist at a time just is for it to participate in an event that occurs at that time. The view has been discussed and defended elsewhere (van Fraassen 1970; Simons 2000; Costa 2017) but the argument here presented is new. The argument builds on the claim that there is a correspondence between the existence of an object at a time and its participation in an event occurring at that time. I present a somehow systematic discussion of possible explanations and conclude that the transcendentist theory of temporal existence provides the most straightforward explanation of the correspondence and that, more generally, any theory that can claim to provide a good explanation of the correspondence does so insofar as it also entails the transcendentist theory.
