Language and Mind Seminar: Patrik Engisch (University of Fribourg, CH): Fiction, Imagination, and Narrative

27th November 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Event Navigation

The notion of a propositional imagination has been said to play a crucial role in an account of the distinction between fiction and non-fiction: fictions are uniquely characterized by the fact that to competently engage with them requires identifying, and acting upon, a Gricean intention that we imagine their content. In this paper, I discuss and argue against two ways this claim has been defended in the literature, one by Gregory Currie (Currie 1990) and one by Kathleen Stock (Stock 2017). On that basis, I then sketch an alternative account of competent engagement with narratives generally and of the kind of propositional imagining such an account requires. I close by some lessons for propositional imagination generally.
