Title: Introduction and Chapter 1 of “An Amelioration of the concept of ‘gender dysphoria’ ” (Work in Progress)

Abstract: This thesis attempts an amelioration of what is currently commonly referred to as ‘gender dysphoria’. The first chapter begins with the identification of three of the most well-known dysphoria-kinds in the vicinity of the concept of dysphoria: (1.1) DSM-gender-dysphoria, (1.2) Wrong-body-dysphoria, and (1.3) Felt-norm-relevance-dysphoria. The second part of this chapter is dedicated to scrutinising the political and normative elements packed into the three concepts. In order to do this, I introduce three desiderata for our concept of ‘gender dysphoria’: one of normativity, one of praxis, and one of inclusivity. I propose that for a concept of ‘gender dysphoria’ to be ethically worthy it must comply with all three desiderata. The result is that all three concepts of ‘gender dysphoria’ fail to meet at least one of the desiderata.
