The sceptical paradox arises from the tension between three appealing claims: (1) that one cannot know the negation of a sceptical hypothesis, (2) that if one cannot know the negation of a sceptical hypothesis, then one cannot know p, and (3) that one knows p. In this talk, I discuss one famous solution to the sceptical paradox: the negation of the closure principle, a.k.a. nonclosure. Starting with Nozick’s tracking account of knowledge, I review some of the main motivations for and objections to nonclosure. My goal is to assess the viability of nonclosure as an anti-sceptical strategy. I will argue that all things considered nonclosure is not the way to go.
