The wonderful Claire Field will be presenting some of her work. Please see the attached abstract:
There is nothing special about normative beliefs – contrary to what has often been thought, there is nothing special about their epistemology, and they play no special role in appraisal. These two claims are distinct, but interrelated. Here I argue first for the mundanity of the epistemology of normative beliefs by dismissing arguments for the view that normative propositions carry a special kind of justificatory weight, and a special kind of immunity to defeat. I then go on to argue that false normative beliefs have no particularly interesting consequences for appraisal or other kinds of evaluation. Contrary to what has often been thought, normative propositions that are believed should contribute some non-zero weight in deliberation, and they should do so in much the same way as other propositions one believes.
