Abstract: In this work, I’m interested in the relations between accounts of group speech acts and accounts of group mental states. Lackey (2021) argues in favour of group assertion inflationism, which is the thesis that groups can assert even if no member of the group asserts. But she rejected group belief inflationism, the thesis that a group can believe that P even if no member believes that P. In this work, I argue that group intention and belief inflationism follows from group assertion inflationism. In short, I argue that groups can delegate a lot of their functions, so it is possible for groups to lie even if none of its members believes that ¬P or intends to deceive about P. Most extensions of lies accounts would require groups to have some mental state about P. Putting these together presents a problem for deflationary accounts of group intention and belief.
