ABSTRACT. — We should all be supporters of conceptual engineering. I take that to be relatively uncontroversial. But why – exactly? That’s where the controversy starts. I give the answer I like, drawing on a view in metaphysics which explains why we need conceptual analyses (of a more or less traditional nature). Perhaps surprisingly, when we are clear about why we need conceptual analyses, we can see why we should be supporters of conceptual engineering.
