Furniture and personal items
The furniture and items available in your room and common areas will depend on your contract type and hall of residence. You can see what is included in your specific hall by visiting the halls of residence pages.

The University has a block insurance policy with cover4insurance.com to provide students with content insurance. The policy covers students' possessions while they are in the residence (room only) and while their possessions are in storage in the residence during vacation periods.
You should review this cover by going to cover4insurance.com to ensure you fully understand the protection provided:

The University provides no advice or administrative services relating to the contract of insurance. For all matters related to the insurance policy, you should contact cover4insurance.com.

You can display posters, postcards and pictures on the notice board in your room only using drawing pins.
Do not:
- use blue-tac, white-tac or any other form of adhesive on the notice board
- attach pictures or other items to the walls, ceiling, furniture or any other fixture in your room.
You will be charged for any damage caused by inappropriately attaching or hanging decorative items.

Cooking equipment
Students are only permitted to bring the following UK purchased kitchen equipment. These must be used and stored in the kitchen area only (subject to space available).
- air fryer
- blender
- coffee grinder
- coffee machine
- electric frying pan or grill
- food processor or mixer
- hand mixer
- juicer
- kettle
- panini press
- rice cooker
- slow cooker
- toaster
- toastie machine
- soda stream.
These items must be PAT tested, have a British three-pin plug and comply with British Safety Standards.
Personal grooming
- curling tong or hair streghtener (must be used with a heat-resistant mat)
- electric toothbrush
- hair dryer
- shaver
These items must be PAT tested and used with a British 3 pin plug (toothbrushes and shavers can be used with a British fused adaptor).
Entertainment
- docking station
- laptop (and charger)
- mobile phone (and charger)
- monitor
- desktop computer
- printer
- radio alarm clock
- scanner
- tablet (and charger)
- TV (recommended no larger than 32 inches)
These items must be PAT tested and used with a British three pin plug. This includes chargers.
Other
- e-cigarettes - must be charged with original chargers only. It is not permitted to smoke or vape in any University building.
- fairy lights - must be LED and PAT tested or battery operated
- lamps - must not be free-standing and must be PAT tested and comply with British Safety Standards
- SAD light box - must be LED or battery operated and PAT tested.
- cooling fans - must be desktop size, be PAT tested and comply with British Safety Standards
- fabric lamps - shade must comply with and display the British Safety Standard symbol and use the correct wattage bulb
- inflatable mattress - must be packed away when not in use
- flags - must not be placed on or near windows
- sporting equipment - must be stored away in a secure place or at the Sports Centre
- musical instruments - must be stored away in a secure place or at the Music Centre.
Requires written permission
The following must have written permission from the residential manager:
- furniture
- humidifiers or de-humidifiers - only if due to medical grounds and requires a medical certificate)
- fridges - only if due to medical grounds and requires a medical certificate (the fridge will be supplied by the hall of residence).

Students are not allowed to bring the following items into residences regardless of where they were purchased. If found, these items will be removed. This list is not exhaustive and is subject to change.
- BBQ
- candles or anything with a naked flame
- firelighters or lighter fuel
- over-door hangers
- plug-in air fresheners
- bean bags
- pull-up bars
- traffic cones
- locking knives or axes
- deep fat fryers
- heating elements
- halogen or induction oven
- electric rings
- electric blankets
- heaters
- lava lamps
- free-standing lamps
- free-standing fans
- cube adaptors
- non-UK multi-plug extension leads
- non-UK fused adaptors
- universal travel adaptor
- shower or hair washing attachments
- e-scooters and associated batteries
- e-bikes and associated batteries (cannot be stored or charged in residences).
