Biography
Kathy Lund Dean earned her PhD from Saint Louis University in Organizational Behavior and Philosophy/Ethics. She holds the Board of Trustees Distinguished Chair in Leadership and Ethics at Gustavus Adolphus College, Minnesota.
Kathy has been a leader in the Academy of Management as former division chair and inaugural ethics blogger for The Ethicist. For over 20 years, she has done editorial work on key journals devoted to the scholarship of teaching and learning, including:
- Journal of Management Education
- Management Teaching Review
- Academy of Management Learning & Education
- Journal of Management Inquiry.
Kathy is keen to assist educators and colleagues in developing their scholarly profiles and infrastructure. Her international work includes Masters programme extern with Maynooth University in Ireland, adjunct professor at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Fulbright Specialist role to assist faculty in institutions working in countries under-represented in academic scholarship.
At the School of Management, Kathy is a member of the Knowledge and Practice research thematic group, involved in helping the School to develop leadership-oriented programs. Her skills workshops and mentoring for research students and early career academics focus on:
- developing academic research articles through submission and revision processes
- building a portfolio that demonstrates excellence in the scholarship of teaching and learning
- ethical issues.
Research areas
Kathy's research areas include:
- innovations in academic career trajectories
- cooperative infrastructures among municipal leaders
- the ethics of experiential pedagogy.
Her 2018 book, The Ethical Professor: A Practical Guide to Research, Teaching and Professional Life, written with Lorraine Eden and Paul Vaaler, offers academics a workbook-like way of learning about potential ethical issues, discussing them in community and creating solutions that preserve ethical integrity.
