• Accessibility for the web

  Accessibility for the web increases your awareness of web accessibility issues and allows you to make your web pages more usable by everyone. 

  By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • define what web accessibility is
  • explore the benefits of web accessibility
  • identify the legal requirements around website accessibility
  • explore how to design a website for accessibility
  • identify and implement practical ways to make your website more accessible.

• Introduction to the digital pattern library

  Introduction to the digital pattern library allows you to identify and become familiar with the visual elements that make up the University's website.

  By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • establish what a digital pattern library is and why we use it
  • identify the rules for using the digital pattern library
  • determine how University web pages are built using patterns
  • keep up to date with digital pattern library developments. 

• Social media

  You must take at least one of the following two social media courses to satisfy this component of the digital visa. 

  An introduction to social media for beginners

  This course is for those who have little or no previous knowledge of social media.

  The aim of this session is to define what social media is and distinguish between the main social media channels and their different uses.

  By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • define social media
  • describe the main social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and LinkedIn
  • create a social media account in line with the University's corporate identity
  • avoid common pitfalls when posting on social media. 

  Developing a social media strategy

  This course is primarily for those who have access to a University-affiliated social media account or are looking to create a new account. It is designed to help you either improve your current social media output or develop a strategy for your new account.

  You should be familiar with using at least one social media platform. If you are unfamiliar with social media, then you should take 'An introduction to social media for beginners' before taking this course.

  The aim of this session is to devise a social media strategy for a University-affiliated social media channel.

  In this session, you will:

  • learn what a social media strategy is and why it is important
  • set out SMART objectives
  • understand your target audience and create audience personas
  • conduct a competitor analysis
  • choose the best social media channels for your purposes
  • create a content calendar
  • learn how to measure success.

• Writing for the web

  Writing for the web allows you to identify and implement user needs in web writing.

  By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • define user-centred design
  • generate user stories
  • analyse how people use the web
  • identify technology challenges for web writing
  • identify what to avoid when writing for the web
  • apply user needs when editing and writing content.

• Advanced writing for the web

  Advanced writing for the web allows you to create effective web content geared for your audience. 

  By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • use the concept of ‘runners, repeaters and strangers’ to focus your web page content on the most important user tasks
  • create an outline for a new web page
  • ensure readers can easily read and understand your content
  • identify and avoid ineffective types of web content
  • create an editing and review process to ensure quality upkeep.
