Establishing endowed Chairs of learning

Attracting and retaining world-class academics

Although our endowment is relatively small, we have used it wisely to invest in research, teaching technologies and the teaching experience at St Andrews. Our recent top ranking in the Guardian University Guide 2024, The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 and the National Student Survey 2024 is testament to the success of this strategy.

If we are to continue to offer world-class learning, teaching and research it is vital that we build our endowment to provide long-term funding for chairs and similar academic appointments. Such posts will position St Andrews as a competitive (and long-term) destination for world-class academics, accelerate academic leadership and enhance outputs and our research reputation ahead of REF2029.

Establishing new Chairs

With support from the Making Waves Campaign, we can focus on creating appointments in the new Business School, and on endowing Chairs in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and in the Department of Chinese Studies.

How you can support us

Chairs are funded at a level of £3 million in the Arts, Divinity and Science faculties and £5m in Medicine. Help us to make waves of excellence by investing in Chairs and academic appointments.
