The Complete University Guide 2020 has placed St Andrews top in Scotland and third in the UK in recognition of the quality of the University’s learning and teaching. The University is also placed top in the UK for overall student experience. Read more.

St Andrews awarded British Academy grant

Dr Giuseppe Pezzini of the School of Classics has been awarded over £100,000 in research funding from the prestigious British Academy. Read more.

Alex and Merlin on bikes


Many of you will have been watching the progress of Alex McMaster and Merlin Hetherington on social media as they train health workers and deliver Arclights across Africa. On 15 May they arrived in Cape Town having trained 843 people, distributed 1050 Arclights, held 22 training sessions, covered 10,450km and spent 217 days on the road! Not content with this, they return to Scotland in time to run the final 42 km of their epic journey in the Edinburgh Marathon on 26 May in a final push to raise funds for this wonderful cause. They have secured just over £17,000 funds of their ambitious £20,000 target. Read more if you want to find out how to help them reach their goal.

Our Women’s Futsal team continues to crowdfund to purchase their first women’s strip, while the Boat Club − who recently won gold medals at the BUCS Regatta in both men’s and Women’s Intermediate pairs − have launched their ambitious crowdfunding Project24.

St Andrews Summer Sports Camps

Saints Sport is hosting camps in Summer 2019 for Hockey (Ages 13-17), Rugby (Ages 8-16), Tennis (13-17) and Ultimate Frisbee (Ages 13-21).

The five-day camps give an insight into all aspects of performance sport at university and incorporate individual specialist skills coaching, technical drills focusing on team play and general fitness and conditioning sessions.

Heather Farley and Daniel Johnstone

And the winners are …

Not one but two winners of the John Honey Award 2019 were announced at the Students’ Association Give Back Awards on 30 April. Heather Farley and Daniel Johnstone were both recognised for their contribution to student welfare throughout their university degrees – Heather through her work with Got Consent and Daniel through his work with Nightline.

Arnold Palmer Invitational, 9 September 2019

Take part in this friendly competition to win the coveted Arnold Palmer Invitational Claret Jug Trophy!  Golfers will spend the day teeing off on the Castle Course with all refreshments and an exclusive Saints Golf gift bag included. General Council News

Business Committee Election
Notification to General Council members that an online election to fill seven vacancies on the Business Committee will open on Monday 27 May 2019 and close on Friday 21 June 2019. All General Council members are eligible to vote and those with a valid email address on the alumni database will be sent information on how to vote when voting opens. Information about the role of Business Committee members and a personal statement for each candidate will also be available on the voting website. Any General Council member who is not currently in receipt of emails and would like to vote online, or who requires a postal ballot, should contact the General Council office as soon as possible. It is important that as many members as possible exercise their right to vote.

Summer Meeting of the General Council – 29 June 2019
The next meeting of the General Council will take place on Saturday 29 June 2019 at 10.30am in Parliament Hall, St Andrews, with tea and coffee available from 10am. The Chancellor, the Rt Hon Lord Campbell of Pittenweem, will preside. The Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Mapstone, will give the University Address. In addition, Professor Vincent Janik, Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute, will give a presentation on the work of the Institute. To help with planning, members are asked to please register their intention to attend by sending an email with their name and, if applicable, their degree and year of graduation to

London: 2019 Alumni Ball

This year’s London Ball is fast approaching, and tickets are selling fast! Join other University of St Andrews alumni, partners and friends at the 2019 Alumni Ball in the magnificent Senate House building at the University of London on Saturday 8 June. Help us to bring the best of St Andrews to the Big Smoke. Dancing starts at 9.30pm, so this year we are adding the option of a Dance Ticket (£25 including one free drink) for those who would prefer to skip dinner and head straight to the dance floor.
