Research in the School of Biology is organised into three major interdisciplinary centres:
- Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC)
- Centre for Biological Diversity (CBD)
- Scottish Oceans Institute (SOI)
Together, these centres encompass the full spectrum of research in biological sciences, spanning investigations on the properties and behaviour of individual molecules to planetary environmental dynamics.
In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, biological sciences at St Andrews was rated top in Scotland and second in the UK for research impact. Overall, St Andrews was ranked in the top 20 departments in the UK for research.
