Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) training
At the University of St Andrews, we embed equality and inclusion in all our work, including organisational development and planning, teaching and research.
We offer a range of training resources to support staff and students to meet our shared responsibility to building an environment where everyone can thrive.
Online learning modules
Mandatory training for staff
All new and current employees are required to complete a number of training courses. These include EDI-related training courses.
Diversity in the Workplace
Diversity in the workplace training is designed to make you aware of the University’s responsibility to support an inclusive working and learning environment in line with the Equality Act 2010.
Unconscious bias
Unconscious bias training helps you recognise the hidden biases that can influence how you think, behave and make decisions. It also shows you how to prevent these biases from inappropriately affecting how you think, feel, and act.
Recruitment and selection
This training is for recruitment panel members only.
Recruitment and selection training explains the University’s approach to fair, impartial and consistent staff recruitment.
You will learn how to recognise and avoid discrimination and unconscious bias, and how to manage any conflicts of interest during the recruitment process.

Active bystander training
This Active bystander training workshop helps you recognise how attitudes and cultural norms can stop people from taking action when they witness problematic and inappropriate behaviour. It gives you the confidence and skills to safely challenge such behaviour when you see it.
Age awareness for people managers
This course helps managers understand ageism as a workplace issue and a personal responsibility. It covers how to recognise and respond to age-related bias, minimise risks associated with age diversity in the workplace, meet legal obligations and create a supportive environment for staff of all ages.
Digital accessibility basics
The Digital Accessibility Basics course provides an introduction to different types of disability and the impact they have on students. It explores how we can better support students, anticipate their needs and be more inclusive.
Disability awareness and inclusive practice course
This course introduces different types of disability and the impact they have on students. It explores how we can better support students, anticipate their needs and be more inclusive.
Diversity for managers
This course is designed for managers who are responsible for other staff and want to improve their knowledge and understanding of key topics, such as the implications of the Equality Act, Equality Impact Assessments and managerial responsibilities.
Introduction to neurodiversity for postgraduate research supervisors
The Introduction to neurodiversity for postgraduate research supervisors is a short workshop to introduce key concepts, as well as some practical strategies and techniques you can use when working with neurodiverse individuals.
Neurodiversity: an introduction
The Neuordiversity: an introduction course explores what neurodiversity means, why it matters in the workplace, and how to recognise and support different ways of thinking and learning. It provides practical insights for creating inclusive environments at work where everyone can thrive.
Pronoun and gender-inclusive language
There are a number of resources to support understanding of gender-inclusive language:

SAFE training
Student Services developed SAFE Training to help staff engage with topics such as mental health, gender-based violence and hate crimes. The online training outlines key information on each topic, which is then explored in a scenario-based discussion.
Student learning
Students are required to complete mandatory training in consent and bystander intervention, and equality, diversity and inclusion, as part of the matriculation process. For more information see the matriculation page.

Bitesize for managers - Dignity and respect
The Bitesize for managers - Dignity and respect workshop is a short, interactive session is led by HR Business Partners. This will give in depth focus on specific policies, discussing the key matters and the “need to know” details. The session is designed for current managers.

The Dignity and Inclusion Portfolio programme of training and resources helps participants build awareness and understanding of topics related to equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing in the workplace.
