Dr Alex Lagatsky and Mr Flavio Fusari have just had two pieces of work accepted for publication. These publications relate to their research on Tm and Ho doped lasers operating near 2 μm. The first is a review article in Laser Physics Letters. The second is an article in Optics Letters. More details about these publications can be found here.

Dr Alex Lagatsky and Dr Christopher Leburn have just had a review article accepted for publication in Progress in Quantum Electronics through a collaboration with Dr Edik Rafailov's group at the University of Dundee. More details about this work can be found here.

Conratuations to Mr Flavio Fusari who recently came second in the IEEE Photonics Society 2009 Best Student Paper Award! This competition took place during the Photonics Society Annual Meeting.

Miss Fiona Bain and Dr Alex Lagatsky have been collaborating with colleagues from the Research Institute for Optical Materials in Belarus and the School of Engineering and Physical Science at Heriot-Watt University here in Scotland on a new publicaton in Optics Express entitled "Ultrafast laser inscribed Yb:KGd(WO4)2 and Yb:KY(WO4)2 channel waveguide lasers". Congratulations to Flavio Fusari who came second in the IEEE Photonics Society Best Student Paper Award at 22nd Annual Lasers and Electro Optics Society Meeting for his invited presentation on "Laser Operation of a Bulk Tm3+:Germanate Glass Laser Around 2 µm with 50 % Internal Slope Efficiency".

Miss Fiona bain has been asked by Prof. Markus Pollnau (Twente University, Enschede, Netherlands) to present her work on "Diode-pumped Yb:tungstate waveguide lasers". Fiona will be travelling to Twente University to present her work on Tuesday the 6th October.

Mr Flavio Fusari has been asked to give an invited paper entitled "Laser Operation of a Bulk Tm3+:Germanate Glass Laser Around 2 µm with 50 % Internal Slope Efficiency" at the 22nd Annual Lasers and Electro Optics Society Meeting, to be held 4 - 8 October 2009 in Belek-Antalya, Turkey. Also congratulations to Prof. Wilson Sibbet who won the Annual Physics Golf cometition. This is the fourth time he has won the event!

Dr Christopher Leburn and fellow workers have been collaborating with members of the Department of Physics, at Imperial College London and the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Cardiff. This has resulted in a new publication in Applied Physics Letters entitled, "Ultrafast absorption recovery dynamics of 1300 nm quantum dot saturable absorber mirrors". Congratulations to Professor Wilson Sibbett who has been granted by Her Majesty The Queen to recieve a Royal Medal from the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his "outstanding contributions to physics and Science in Scotland, and the role he has played in bringing Scottish research in opto-electronics and photonics to the world-leading position it has attained today".
