PhD Funding

In 2012 - 2013 SASP is offering THREE THREE-YEAR PHD STUDENTSHIPS under the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) BLOCK GRANT SCHEME. These studentships offer full funding to UK residents (covering full fee waiver and a maintenance grant of approximately £13,000 per annum). European Union students from outside the United Kingdom are eligible for the fee waiver.

SASP also has its own funding. In 2012/13, we will be awarding at least one FULL DOCTORAL STUDENTSHIP, which covers both maintenance at the AHRC rate (see above) and a full fee waiver (for either EU or overseas fees) for THREE years.

If you wish to be considered for any SASP funding, please indicate clearly in your application whether you are a Home, EU or overseas applicant. Only applications received before the deadline of 6th February 2012 will be considered for funding. We hope to allocate funding on or soon after 11th March 2012.

Other PhD Support

There are a variety of external funding sources – see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/Financialinformation/ and/or www.careers.stir.ac.uk/students/Funding.php.

We highlight three schemes here, one for students with a first-class honours degree from a Scottish university, two for overseas students:

Carnegie/Caledonian Scholarships for Scottish students

Graduates of a Scottish University holding a degree with first-class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research for a PhD degree can be considered for the award of a Carnegie Scholarship. Students in their final year who are expected to achieve first-class honours may apply, withdrawing if they fail to achieve it. Scholarships, which can be held at any University in the United Kingdom, but usually in Scotland, provide fees, maintenance and a research and travel allowance. Applications must be submitted electronically by 15th March, followed by a signed hard copy, for applicants to be considered for an award for the following session. The Trust also administers Scholarships funded by the Caledonian Research Foundation, which are held under identical conditions save that the Scholarship must be held in Scotland. See http://www.carnegie-trust.org/our_schemes.htm.

The Mind Association Foreign Doctoral Studentship

The Mind Association is offering a three-year Foreign Doctoral Studentship in Philosophy, of £28,000 per annum, for non-EU candidates, starting in September or October 2010. Application materials are due on 1 March. See
http://www.mindassociation.org/?page_id=38

Teaching

Many MPhil and PhD supplement their income by teaching within their department. However, it is not possible to fully support yourself by this route.

MLitt Funding

SASP will fund FIVE M.Litt awards of £4000 in 2012/13. If you would like to be considered for an M.Litt award please state that clearly on your application. Applicants who wish to be considered for an award should submit their application by 15 March 2012.

Scottish students may apply for Carnegie Cameron Post-Graduate (Taught) Bursaries for MLitt. Full details available from http://www.carnegie-trust.org/our_schemes.htm.

The Scottish Universities are allocated a certain number of Bursaries by the Trust and the Bursaries are awarded directly by each university. Candidates wishing to be considered for the Bursaries should approach the university where they wish to study and NOT the Trust.

Unfortunately, there is no AHRC funding available for SASP MLitt students in 2012/13. Also, the M.Litt degree is not covered by SORS, as it is not a research degree.

You should also consider external sources of funding and apply wherever you are eligible – see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/Financialinformation/ and/or www.careers.stir.ac.uk/students/Funding.php.

Please be careful to note closing dates for applications. Some of these come early in the academic year, and you usually need to have an acceptance from SASP (it can be conditional) before you apply for funding.
