The Postgraduate Conversion Diploma in Philosophy
The SASP conversion diploma is designed for applicants with a good undergraduate degree (2:1 or 1st) that is not in philosophy. It consists of a year of undergraduate philosophy courses. Satisfactory performance in the conversion diploma can lead to admission to the MLitt. Several previous conversion diploma students have gone on to the MLitt, and then to further study in philosophy.
To complete the Conversion Diploma, each student must take a total of 120 points worth of undergraduate courses. (Most senior undergraduate courses are 30 points, so this usually means you will take four courses – two in each semester.)
1. You must take at least one of the two third year core courses (PY3701 – Language and Reality; and PY3702 – Value and Normativity). You may take both. These are 30 points each.
2. Your other courses will normally be taken from Philosophy Honours Courses.
3. You must take at least three honours modules. This includes your core course(s).
4. You may take 30 points of sub-honours (junior undergraduate) modules instead of a fourth honours module.
Information on honours courses is available on-line via the St Andrews Philosophy department website.
